Cultivation Advice

Outdoors all year round, it should preferably be planted in a sunny or partly shady spot.

For good health, Glycine needs a substrate that is always moist. Water your tree regularly, allowing the root ball to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid over-watering. Under- or over-watering is not necessarily good for your bonsai.

Important: Don't hesitate to water the entire root ball right down to the roots. The water can be drained through the holes in the underside of the pot or you can bathe the tree in water for a few minutes to make sure you water all the way down to the roots. We advise against putting a dish or container under your pot, as the water will stagnate and may cause the roots to rot (too much water = asphyxiation).

In spring/summer, water regularly. In hot weather, water every day! In winter, on the other hand, water according to how you look after the soil. Thanks to the rain and cold, you won't necessarily need to water regularly as the substrate will remain moist.

In the nursery, we use potting compost made up of black peat, blond peat, aged eco, topsoil, horse manure and pozzolan. You can adapt your substrate to suit your needs, using a mixture of akadama, pumice or others...

Repotting should be done before flowering, in spring, every two years.

In winter, you can cut back 2 or 3 buds to slow the tree's growth. Anticipate the development of new branches in summer, which you can remove as you go along. Remove the terminal buds to preserve the secondary buds and shorten the internodes.

In the nursery, we use NPK 12 12 17 blue tomato/flower fertiliser. This is a perfect fertiliser to supplement nutrients. Put a handful on the substrate, more or less depending on the size of the pot. Fertilise from spring to autumn (May to October), every 2 months.
